Reception

Welcome to the Reception page
I am Mrs Palmer and my teaching assistants are Ms Stilla Jo and Ms Jenny Han. Together we aim to make this a happy and productive year for all the children in our care. In Reception the children are developing their independence and learning to take responsibility for themselves. They are given frequent opportunities to make decisions and be “risk-takers”. The children initiate inquiry and we have a lot of fun throughout the year sharing our learning with our friends and family. When possible we also go into the local Korean community with many varied visits and experiences. We welcome and encourage parents to be involved with our learning, making the most of the very international parent and student population that we have in our class, school and community
Our main units of inquiry for the year are “My Family”, “Transport”, “Colour”, Music and Movement”, “Our School” and “Water”. We integrate all curriculum areas into our units wherever possible. This is the final year of the Early Learning Centre programme and children are preparing for their move to the Elementary section of the school.
The central idea is “water is an essential resource that can be used and saved in many ways”. We will focus on where water comes from, the uses of water, and water pollution and conservation. The major concepts covered will be responsibility and change. We will have an investigation area set up in the classroom which will have different resources each week. The children will learn about the water cycle and will make a large display using a giant window to draw on. We will find out what happens to water when it is heated and cooled and we will make jelly and an iceberg along the way! We will be finding out about materials that float and sink and will be participating in many experiments. An important aspect of this unit is water conservation. The children will find out about uses of water and the ways we can all save water. There will also be a trip to a local water cleaning station. At the end of the unit the children will make a presentation to their parents telling them about the importance of water and giving suggestions on ways we can all conserve water and cut down on pollution. We hope that after the unit is completed the children will all realize the importance of water and how everyone has a role to play in conserving this precious resource.
