About Us

Grade 1

Welcome to Grade One!

My name is Mr Newland and I am the Grade One teacher. Our classroom is an exciting and caring environment where students are encouraged to become risk-takers to further their academic and social abilities. There are 15 students in our class that originate from a wide variety of countries such as Russia, Japan, Australia, Norway, Finland and America. By being so culturally diverse we are able to develop our international mindedness by learning from one another and by following the attributes of the Learner Profile.

Over the year we cover six Units of Inquiry that cover all the transdisciplinary themes and concepts. Where authentic links to the central ideas can be made, we integrate the subject areas of mathematics, Language, I.C.T and art into our units. This enables the students to have a broader understanding of the world around them and to make their learning relevant to real life situations.

The ‘Units of Inquiry’ we will be investigating this term are;

Animals in Danger
Central idea-The survival of animals and their habitats depend on nature and people too.
From Field to Table
Central idea-There are many processes involved in food production.

 As with our previous units, we expect students to demonstrated their learning outcomes with initiated actions to drive the investigation further. The learner profiles we will be targeting are caring, communicator and thinker. This term students we will be focusing on Data Handling and Measurement. Both topics will be integrated into our Units of Inquiry where it is applicable. Through investigative and open-ended activities, students will be exploring the concepts of ‘responsibility’ and ‘connection’ in order to relate their make their mathematical understandings to real-life situations.
