About Us

Grade 5

Welcome to Grade 5
Grade 5 at the International School of Busan is the final year of the Primary Years Program. This is an exciting year in the life of an Elementary School student as they develop more independence in preparation for the transition to Middle School. There are currently 16 students in the class who originate from a diverse range of countries including: Greece, Netherlands, Russia, France, Korea and Japan. The diversity of the class brings richness to our learning environment as students share their knowledge and life experiences with others. We focus on respect, appreciation and tolerance in all that we do. Communication between home and school is highly valued and our students and their parents have access to the Grade 5 blog which details class news, web links, photos and homework. I would welcome the opportunity to tell you more about Grade 5 at ISB and can be contacted on mroland@isbusan.org

Grade 5 students work on six PYP Units of Inquiry throughout the year. These are: We are Individuals, Human Migration, Grade 5 Exhibition, Power to the People, Fashion and Style and Conflicts and Solutions. Each Unit is very carefully planned to ensure a broad range of learning objectives are covered throughout the year and the life of a student at ISB. While working on the Units of Inquiry students are able to both develop and apply their knowledge of Maths, Languages, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music and I.C.T.

The first Unit of Inquiry this term is the PYP Exhibition. The class has already spent time learning about the requirements of the Exhibition and deciding upon the issue they wish to study in detail. The Exhibition Unit will be our major focus for the next 7 weeks. Students will work in small groups with the support of a group mentor to identify their lines of inquiry, intended outcomes and the action they wish to take.

Students will strive to apply all aspects of the learner profile and the attitudes as identified in the PYP. They will apply the concepts and work collaboratively to investigate the lines of inquiry, present their findings and then take action. The outcomes will be publicly presented to the wider school community on June 2nd.

In our second Unit of Inquiry for  3rd term will be examining the central idea: “Finding peaceful solutions leads to a better quality of human life.” The lines of inquiry are:

·       Causes of conflict

·       Conflict resolution and management

·       Living and working together peacefully

The concepts we will focus on are causation, perspective and responsibility. The Learner Profiles we will concentrate on are: Reflective, Principled, Thinkers and Open-minded.
