High School - Geography
Welcome to ISB High School Geography. Our students that choose Geography in Grades 9 and 10 work toward the award of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, better known as the IGCSE Programme, administered by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The two-year course culminates in Grade 10 with the sitting of three externally-marked Geography examinations.
Within the ISB High School Geography program students are encouraged to develop a sense of place, and an understanding of relative location, on a local, regional and global scale. Through a study of the characteristics and distribution of a selection of contrasting physical and human environments, students come to understand some of the processes that affect the development of these environments. They gain an insight into the spatial effects of the ways in which people interact with each other, and with their environments. Together with a wider understanding of different communities and cultures throughout the world, students come to appreciate the contrasting opportunities and constraints presented by different environments. All students learn various topics, ranging from the population characteristics of regions of the world, through to the growth and development of settlements as a direct result of population growth. The next major topic for investigation takes us to the natural environment and the study of plate tectonics, rivers and coastal systems. Finally we examine how a country’s economic development takes place. We study why some countries remain poor, while others thrive and massively expand. Part of our investigation into economic growth takes us to the use and management of resources. Overall the study of Geography at ISB is dynamic, with a number of field trips designed to compliment what transpires in the classroom.
