Welcome to the ISB History Department homepage!!! This page is designed to introduce you to the History programs on offer to ISB students at the high school level and provide you with the contact information of the History Department faculty should you need to get in touch with us.
Within the ISB High School History program students participate in two of the world’s most stimulating and prestigious programs, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
Grades 9-10: IGCSE Modern World History
ISB students who choose History in grades 9-10 participate in the IGCSE program, which is administered by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The two year course culminates in Grade 10 with the sitting of 3 externally marked History examinations. The IGCSE History course is a 20th Century Modern World History course that focuses on the following thematic key questions:

In addition to this core 20th Century World History Program, students examine the history of a particular region in more depth, known as the depth study. ISB students examine the following topic for the depth study requirement:

Grades 11-12: IB Modern World History
Upon successful completion of the IGCSE History program, students will have the historical knowledge and skills required for historical research to succeed in the Grades 11-12 IB History Program. Students in Grade 11 may choose to take the ISB IBDP History Course. The IB History course, administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a two-year university preparatory course that culminates with the sitting of 3 externally marked History examinations. In addition to these examinations, over the course of the program, students are required to write a 1500-2000 word in-depth historical investigation that demonstrates an ability to formulate an historical argument as well as make use of primary and secondary resources.
The ISB IB History course is a Modern World History course that focuses primarily on 20th century European history, as well as the major economic, political, and social events of international relations in the 20th century. Students who take the course may do so at the Standard Level or Higher Level; Higher Level students are required to focus on an in-depth study of a particular world region in addition to the core content of the course. ISB IB History students participate in the following course:
· Prescribed Subject: Communism in Crisis 1976-1989
· 20th Century Thematic Topics:
o Rise and Rule of Single Party States
§ Russia under Lenin/Stalin
§ Germany under Hitler and the Nazis
§ China under Mao
o The Cold War
Higher Level History students focus their regional depth study on aspects of European history that include:
- Imperial Russia and the Emergence of the USSR
- The USSR and Eastern Europe 1924-2000
- WWI and post-war Western Europe 1939-2000
