Dear Parents and Guardians,
It has been wonderful to welcome back our new and returning students this week. The classes have been busy learning classroom routines and settling with their new teachers. It has been lovely to see returning parents and new parents supporting their child’s transition. A great start to the new school year!

Welcoming new students and teachers in Elementary
After introducing our new Elementary teachers and assistants, Ms Deanna distributed Anchored 4 Life welcome packs to the new students as we wish them a smooth transition to Busan and BIFS.
Whole School Welcome assembly and PTA Ice-Cream Social
Mr Baker, Mr Roland and Mr Smith introduced the new teachers to the whole school and Mr Baker officially opened the 2018-19 school year. The day finished with a refreshing ice-cream social, kindly organised by the PTA. Thank you!

Playground Developments
Over the summer holidays, we have upgraded our playground facilities with a new, huge sand-pit, a new pebble-pit, resurfaced climbing area and refurbished climbing frame. In the ELC playground, the surface has been replaced and the sandpit refreshed. We hope the students enjoy these new facilities. Coming soon….an outdoor table-tennis table!
PTA Welcome Picnic
The PTA is hosting a Welcome Picnic on Saturday, 25 August 2018, from 11 am to 2 pm. We hope to provide a comfortable and casual setting for families from both our students and staff to get to know each other better as we embark on a new school year together.
Canopies will be set up at the school field, and desserts will be provided. We invite all families to bring their own lunches and picnic mats.
Children will be able to participate in various activities including mini soccer, basketball, kickball and some water games. If you have a water gun at home, you are welcome to bring it for our water gun fight. Please pack a change of clothes, if you plan on getting wet!
Please RSVP by clicking on the link below. (It will only take 2 seconds to complete.)
Let us know if you have any questions. Please contact at ptapresident@isbusan.org. We are here for you and look forward to seeing you there!
Behaviour on the bus
As we start the new year, please take some time to review the bus rules. These are designed to keep everyone on the bus safe as they travel to and from school. Thank you for your cooperation.
After-school Supervision
It is lovely to see families enjoy the playground facilities after school. Please be reminded that Elementary students must be supervised after school to ensure safe and respectful behaviour at all times. Please note that the Pebble Pit will not be available after school and students may not add water to the sand pit. Thank you for your support.

Back to School Afternoon
This will take place on Tuesday 28th August at 1.30pm. It is a chance to learn about the programmes at school, including specialist classes and support services. More information will be sent home soon.
Parent-Teacher initial Conferences
Homeroom teachers would like to meet with parents to learn more about each student in their class. We aim for teachers and parents to work together in educating the students at BIFS. At these conferences, held on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th August between 1pm to 5pm, you will speak with your child’s homeroom teacher about your child’s strengths, areas of interest, concerns and any hopes you have for this year. Details and sign up will be sent home today.

Social Emotional Counselor

Introduction of Services

Busan International Foreign School is committed to providing quality education to its students. In an effort to achieve this goal, school staff or parents/guardians may refer students for counseling, or students may request counseling. The aim of the school counseling services is to help students have more effective education and socialization within the school community. Possible counseling topics are coping with changes, transition, self-esteem, friendship and relationship issues, study skills, stress management, fears or worries, academic progress, conflict resolution, social skills, adjustment to school or culture, etc. These services are available at no cost. However, these services are not intended as a substitute for medication, or psychological diagnosis, which are not the responsibility of the school.

Mr. Joey Dekens, the Whole School Social Emotional Counselor, may see students for one-time visits or for a longer term of sessions (usually up to 10) according to a student’s need. He will be in contact with a student’s  parent(s) if he feels the student may benefit from further sessions after initial drop-in visit, to discuss the student’s needs and to gain signed informed consent (form attached) to counseling . The school counselor may also see students in groups for various issues. Further, he is always available to speak to parents regarding any concern that they may have regarding their children. The school counselor will be available for secondary secondary students on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while his availability for elementary students will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please do not hesitate to contact him at jdekens@isbusan.org or by phone at (0)51-720-1151 (Elementary) and (0)51-720-1139 (Secondary). Please see the attached private referral form to refer your child and please sign and return the consent form to school should your child need to see the counselor.
