Thank you from Head of School

Dear Parents,
A special thank you to the over 30 parents that attended our admin coffee this past week on the topic of Child Protection. I deeply appreciate our communities collaborative commitment to the important fundamental rights and safety for all children.
Attached HERE,  please find a detailed description of the comprehensive Child Protection Program that is in place at ISB. I would encourage you to take the time to read it and explore the resource links.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Canadian Math Contest

Dear Parents of students in Grades 9, 10, and 11,

We have many talented mathematicians at our school, and so we would like to offer students a chance to participate in international mathematics competitions.

On Thursday, April 11, 2018, The University of Waterloo is hosting their annual math contests for students in grades 9, 10, and 11. The contests are listed below.

Fryer Contest – Grade 9 and below

Galois Contest – Grade 10 and below

Hypatia Contest – Grade 11 and below

Students will be given 75 minutes to complete 4 written questions. Rather than testing content, most of the contest problems test logical thinking and mathematical problem-solving skills.

These contests provide great opportunities to inspire students who already have a strong interest in mathematics, and also help to increase confidence and ability in mathematics for other students.

These contests are designed to be accessible to a large number of students, and they also challenge very strong students. Past contest questions can be found

Interested students and parents can contact Ms. Suh at <[email protected]> by Friday, March 22, 2019, 5 pm to register to write these contests. The school will cover the entrance fees. The contests run 90 minutes (75 minutes to write, 15 minutes to prepare) and will be conducted after school on Thursday, April 11, 2019.

We believe that our students will benefit from and enjoy the experience of writing these contests.

We believe that our students will enjoy the experience of writing these contests as well as benefit from the rigor and challenge that this opportunity provides.

ISB International Day is April 27th
With ISB having over 30 different countries represented, this is our biggest event of the year and we need your support! Each country has the opportunity to have a booth at International Day. In order to make appropriate plans, we need to know which countries will be represented. By adding your name and choosing a country, you are helping the PTA know who to contact for each country that wishes to be showcased. Only the countries that sign up BY APRIL 9th will have a booth.
We are aware that many families at BIFS come from different countries; therefore, spouses and children are not required to represent the same country.
Please sign up here
Further questions, email us at [email protected].

ISB International Cookbook

Time is running out to get your family recipes to us to be included in the school International Cookbook. If you’re nervous about your English, we can help check over readability of translated recipes or help with translation of Korean recipes. We don’t want anyone to miss out! I know how proud all the children will feel seeing their names and favorite recipes in the cookbook!

Send your recipe to: [email protected] with the subject title “ISB Cookbook” as soon as possible.

Remember to include the following information:

  1. Submitted by:

  2. Parent of _____, grade(s) ____

  3. Name of Recipe:

  4. Recipe’s country of origin:

  5. List ingredients by order of use, a conversion chart will be included within the book.

  6. Cooking instructions – please include details such as cooking times, pan sizes, temperatures, how many does it serve? etc.

  7. Category Information: Is this a dessert or breakfast? Vegetarian or gluten-free? Traditional Thanksgiving beverage or everyday drink? Use as many categories as you’d like!

  8. The backstory is optional, but it would be wonderful to include how/when your family enjoys eating this or why this is a favourite family recipe.

We can’t wait to see your recipes!

Managebac for Student Absence from School

Using Managebac to inform the school of your child’s absence. This is easy to do and makes it very easy for all teachers to see that your child is absent from a particular class.
Mr Gysbers has made this video to help parents who are trying to do an ‘attendance excusal’ on ManageBac.

Vaping & E-Cigarettes

Over the past 3-5 years, in Korea and many other countries, accessibility to tobacco products has become more and more difficult. Governments have cracked down hard on cigarette smoking in restaurants, clubs, office buildings – particularly in countries such as the USA, Australia and Korea. At the same time, escalating prices of tobacco products, restricting the accessibility of tobacco products to teenagers and the ever-present push by health organisations around the world to make people aware of the health risks associated with smoking, has seen a boom in the e-cigarette market. From my reading, there are NO positive effects associated with ‘vaping’! In fact the opposite! I have attached a number of articles from the US Surgeon General which I would encourage you to read. I would also encourage parents to read the article I attached discussing the approaches adopted to e-cigarettes by countries around the world – the responses are quite alarming!

From the perspective of the school, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and associated electronic smoking devices are banned from the school as per the school’s policy. I have attached the Secondary Handbook HERE. Specific reference is made to cigarettes & e-cigarettes/smoking on page 22 of the handbook. The consequences of bringing on campus and/or using tobacco products is also clearly outlined.

E-Cigarettes come in all shapes and sizes!
